The Stoddard Firm’s client was a minor child living in an apartment complex in Reno, Nevada. Unfortunately, one day while taking a shower, the child suffered a seizure, fell, struck the shower’s temperature handle, and became incapacitated. As if this were not bad enough, when the boy struck the temperature handle, the shower’s water temperature was turned up to its maximum setting — over 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This is far beyond what is allowed by applicable laws and regulations and caused severe burns.
Unable to move due to his seizure, the child continued to be burned worse and worse until he was finally able to remove himself from the shower. As a result, he suffered horrific burns of varying degrees over approximately 40% of his body, had to be airlifted to a prominent hospital, underwent nearly a month of painful bandage changes, and ultimately had to relearn how to walk.
Over the course of the following year, The Stoddard Firm retained multiple experts — including engineers, physicians, and plumbing specialists — conducted on-site investigations, obtained the apartment complex’s permitting and citation records, and secured schematic documentation for the shower, water heater, and piping systems involved.
